Apart from the tourists, Venice has a small-town vibe and mentality. Greet shopkeepers with a “buongiorno” and thank them or say good bye upon leaving.
Modest dress is required at St. Mark’s Basilica and recommended at most other churches. This means no bare shoulders, shorts, or short skirts. Also be aware of pickpockets inside the Basilica; it is a notorious haven for well-dressed thieves.
Venetians enjoy the delicious tradition of cicchetti—the Italian sibling of Spanish tapas. Head to a bustling bar at any time of day and enjoy some bite-size snacks and a glass of local wine.
